Munnar Travel Guide & Tour Packages

Munnar takes its name from the meeting of three mountain streams — the Muthirapuzha, Nallathanni and Kundala — and the town still feels shaped by water and altitude. In the late nineteenth century, British planters cleared these steep slopes for tea, and the result is the landscape Munnar is known for today: estate after estate of neatly clipped bushes folding over the hills, broken up by eucalyptus groves, silver-oak shade trees and the occasional red-roofed factory.

Step beyond the plantations and the scenery turns wilder. Shola forests cling to the valleys, high grasslands roll towards Anamudi — at 2,695 metres the tallest peak in South India — and herds of the endangered Nilgiri tahr graze the cliffs of Eravikulam National Park. Mornings often begin with cloud sitting below the viewpoints, and by afternoon the valleys clear into long green panoramas. Munnar works for almost any kind of traveller. Couples come for misty mornings and plantation resorts, families for boating, parks and gentle sightseeing, and active travellers for sunrise jeep rides and ridge treks. Because it sits on the main route between Kochi and Thekkady, it also fits naturally into a wider Kerala circuit that ends on the backwaters.

⛰
Eravikulam National Park (Rajamala)
Around 13 km from town, Eravikulam was set up to protect the Nilgiri tahr, a sure-footed mountain goat found only in the southern Western Ghats. Visitors enter the Rajamala tourism zone by forest department shuttle bus and walk a paved stretch along grassy slopes where tahr are often seen at close range. The park usually closes for the calving season in February and March, and entry slots sell out in peak months, so book online in advance.
◍
Anamudi Peak
South India's highest summit rises inside Eravikulam's protected core. Trekking to the top is restricted, but the peak dominates the skyline from the Rajamala area and several roadside viewpoints — a striking sight on a clear winter morning.
❥
Tea Museum, Nallathanni
Just outside town, this museum run by the Kannan Devan estate company walks you through Munnar's planting history with old machinery, photographs and a short film, followed by a live demonstration of orthodox tea processing. Finish with a tasting and pick up fresh estate tea.
≋
Mattupetty Dam and Lake
About 13 km along the Top Station road, this concrete dam holds back a long, calm reservoir surrounded by hills and grassland. Speedboats and pedal boats operate on the water, and wild elephants are sometimes spotted along the far banks in the evening.
❥
Echo Point and Kundala Lake
A short drive beyond Mattupetty, Echo Point is a lakeside spot where shouts bounce back off the surrounding hills — a favourite with children. Further on, Kundala Lake offers shikara rides beside an arch dam and, in season, cherry blossom trees along the shore.
◷
Top Station
Roughly 32 km from town on the Kerala–Tamil Nadu border, Top Station was once the upper terminus of a ropeway that carried tea down to the plains. Today it is Munnar's classic sunrise point, with sweeping views over the valleys of Theni district. Arrive early; cloud often rolls in by mid-morning.

Sightseeing spots are spread over a wide area, so a private cab with a local driver is the most practical option. Kolukkumalai requires a jeep hired from Suryanelli. State and private buses connect the main towns but are slow for sightseeing. Autorickshaws work well for short hops around town.

Good to know

Two nights cover the main sights comfortably. Add a third night if you want to include Kolukkumalai at sunrise, the Marayoor valley or a trek.

About 110 km, which usually takes 3 to 3.5 hours by road depending on traffic and weather.

September to March offers the best mix of clear views and cool weather. April and May are popular with families escaping summer heat, while June to August is wet but lush and budget-friendly.

No. It normally closes during the Nilgiri tahr calving season in February and March. Dates are announced each year by the forest department, so check before planning.

The flowers bloom en masse roughly every twelve years. After the 2018 bloom, the next is expected around 2030.

Yes. Plantation resorts, private viewpoints, cool evenings and misty mornings make it one of Kerala's most popular honeymoon choices, and it pairs well with a houseboat night in Alleppey.

You can, and the scenery is at its greenest. Expect heavy rain, occasional road restrictions and limited views on some days; keep your schedule flexible.

If you are flying into Kochi, Munnar first is the usual order: Kochi → Munnar → Thekkady → backwaters, which avoids backtracking.
