Thekkady
Thekkady Travel Guide & Tour Packages
Thekkady is the doorway to the Periyar Tiger Reserve, one of the best-known protected forests in South India. The heart of the reserve is a sprawling, many-armed lake created when the Mullaperiyar Dam was completed in 1895. Its flooded valleys left behind a maze of inlets and the silver stumps of drowned trees — a setting where elephants, gaur and sambar deer wander down to drink while boats glide quietly past.
What makes Thekkady different from a typical safari destination is how closely conservation is tied to local communities. Many of the reserve's walks, rafting trips and overnight trails are run with guides drawn from nearby villages, including families who once depended on the forest for firewood and hunting. Visitors get knowledgeable trackers; the forest gets protectors. Outside the reserve, the rolling hills around Kumily are Kerala's spice bowl. Cardamom grows under the shade of tall trees, pepper vines climb every trunk, and small plantations open their gates for guided walks. Evenings in town bring Kathakali and Kalaripayattu performances, spice-market browsing and cool, forest-scented air.
